Dolphin Coast, KwaZulu-Natal

A local's guide to Salt Rock & Ballito

Everything within easy reach of The Waves — beaches, coffee, markets and things to do on this stretch of KwaZulu-Natal's Dolphin Coast, about 40 minutes north of Durban.

Getting your bearings

Salt Rock, part of greater Ballito

Salt Rock is a small coastal village on the Dolphin Coast, within the greater Ballito area of KwaZulu-Natal's North Coast. It's known for warm, swimmable Indian Ocean water, a slower pace than central Ballito, and easy access to everything the North Coast has to offer — all about 40 minutes' drive north of Durban and 20–25 minutes from King Shaka International Airport.

Beaches

Salt Rock Beach

Directly in front of The Waves, Salt Rock Beach is lifeguard-patrolled and shark-net protected, with a natural tidal pool that's sheltered enough for kids to swim and safe for snorkelling. It's a two-minute walk from the apartment — sandals and a towel is about all the planning it takes.

Coffee & food

Cafés within walking distance

Waterberry Café

A relaxed local favourite for breakfast and coffee, an easy stroll from Salt Rock Beach.

Sage Café & Deli

Shopping & markets

Ballito Junction Mall & the Farmers Market

Ballito Junction Mall is about a 10-minute drive away, with supermarkets, shops and restaurants for anything you didn't pack. If your visit lines up with a weekend, the Ballito Farmers Market runs every Saturday, Sunday and public holiday from 8am to 3pm — a good spot for local produce, food stalls and a slower morning.

With the family

Sugar Rush Park

A short drive from Salt Rock, Sugar Rush Park has bike trails, ziplining and a petting zoo — a solid half-day option if you're travelling with kids and want a break from the beach. Durban itself, with its wider range of attractions, is around 40 minutes south.
